Patients with severe illnesses including dysfunctional granulocytes (leukaemia, neutrocytopenia = congenital reduction of neutrophile granulocytes), develop extensive parodontal illnesses. Ever-recurring infections lead to a severe and rapid destruction of parodontal structures.

Many genetically related illnesses go hand in hand with the symptoms of parodontal inflammatory diseases. These include neutrocytopenia, Down syndrome (trisomy 21), histiocytose syndrome and others.
